Tel is a console-based program that acts as a simple phone book.
What's more, tel is distributed under the MIT license, making it completely free software. Download it at no charge, share it with your friends, or even modify and sell it. The possibilities are endless.
Originally developed as a bash script by Pot and sabsirro in the German Ubuntu forum ubuntuusers.de, tel has come a long way since its inception. With development continuing at quick pace, it became evident that bash was insufficient for writing such a large project. Pot and sabsirro had planned to rewrite tel in Perl, but before development could begin, lunar came up with a Python version of the program. This version was met with great interest and eventually, Pot, lunar and sabsirro joined forces to create the tel developer team.
To run tel, you will need Python 2.4 or later installed. This latest release includes a number of new features and several bug fixes. Three new fields for post office box, country, and title have been added. Many encoding issues have been resolved and tel now always reads and writes phone book files in UTF-8 encoding. The output is encoded appropriately to terminal encoding and there are also improvements concerning localization. Gettext catalogs are always searched in the correct path and there are several minor improvements and fixes in output formatting and messages. The setup script has undergone some changes, with support for uninstallation through the "uninstall" command added.
Overall, tel is a reliable and efficient program for managing your phone book entries. Download it today and see for yourself how easy it can be to keep track of your contacts right from your terminal.
