WCP is an archive program's client component, while WCPD serves as the program's server.
One thing to note is that wcp is not recommended for full system backups and does not store copied files on backup mediums like tape or DVD. Rather, it is designed to store directory trees such as home directories, source code, and more.
The idea for wcp was inspired by a document about the plan9 operating system. The plan9 fileserver created snapshots on the current server content, which were offered to users as a part of the regular fileserver. While the plan9 server did this snapshotting on the filesystem's block level, wcp does something similar on the file level.
This latest release includes a fix for a bug that previously limited filename lengths to above 40 characters. Overall, if you're looking for a tool to store directory trees, wcp is definitely worth considering.
