XPN is a Unicode-enabled newsreader available on multiple platforms.
The software has been designed to be completely portable, meaning that it can run on almost any system where Python and GTK+2 can work. This feature has been tested on both Linux and Windows platforms, and it works flawlessly. Furthermore, XPN supports all major charsets - starting from US-ASCII to UTF-8 - making it a versatile tool for people everywhere.
XPN's standout feature, however, is its ability to edit articles with the best charset, although the user can always override this. Also, there are other useful features such as scoring, filtered views, random tag-lines, external editor support, one-key navigation, ROT13, spoiler char, to name a few.
The software has several key features that make it a must-have in the domain of newsreaders. First, XPN now supports online and offline modes, through which the user can either have a local news-server or a DSL connection. Also, the software fully complies with MIME standards, and users can read articles coded with quoted-printable, 7bit or 8bit.
XPN also offers scoring rules that allow users to assign scores based on fields such as From, Subject, Date, Message-ID, References, Age, Xpost, Xref, Bytes, and Lines. Users can also create action rules that trigger an action to be applied to the article and act on the same fields mentioned above plus a new field named Score.
Multiple layouts can be used to open three different panes, and the software offers users the chance to change article colors to their preference. Users can also add random taglines from their text file, and XPN supports decoding of the X-Face and Face headers. Finally, it is multilingual, and users can translate the software into their language using the xpn.pot file inside the lang directory.
XPN is a fantastic software that offers a wide array of features that make it unbeatable in this domain.
