Miller's Quest! is an RPG simulator game that allows players to experience the excitement of role-playing without the need for constant monitoring.
The game was largely inspired by Progress Quest, its direct ancestor. Written in Ruby programming language, it also drew inspiration from Dwemthy's Array. However, MQ is not entirely progress-driven. In fact, all monsters in the game have actual stats, and there's actual fighting based on probability. Since dying in a continually running game is pretty boring, the player automatically gets revived and healed.
MQ owes a lot of its continued existence to Ruby Development Tools, the Ruby environment for the Eclipse Platform. The latest release has fixed the combat system, making it work more accurately. Additionally, a previously confusing display message has been fixed. New features include optional support for curses/terminfo to display combat more comprehensively and better lookingly by coloring the output--but this currently requires tput(1) from ncurses. Players of Progress Quest should feel right at home with Miller's Quest! but will appreciate the added depth and nuance of MQ's combat system.
