VNC is an acronym that stands for Virtual Network Computing, a software program that enables remote desktop access and control over the internet.
This software is widely used by millions of people in industry, academia, and privately. There are several versions of VNC available, including a free version and some enhanced commercial versions. The package includes features like vncviewer, vncserver, vncconfig, vncpasswd, and vnckeygen. You can also use this distribution to turn a native XFree86 version 4 X server into a VNC server.
Modifying VNC settings is easy thanks to the system-wide defaults file at /etc/vnc/config or the user's own overrides at %HOME/.vnc/config. You can edit and change VNC settings and X server settings. Specific instances of vncserver can also override settings on the command line.
VNC Viewer for Java is in-built in the VNC server. However, you can use newer viewer versions if required by placing the files in a suitable directory, such as /usr/local/vnc/classes, and setting VNC Server's httpdir parameter.
To install VNC, copy the programs to a directory that is in your PATH environment variable, such as /usr/local/bin, and run the vncinstall script. It tries to install the manual pages in an appropriate directory and the vnc.so XFree86 version 4 module if appropriate.
There are limitations to this software. A limited trial period is available as set out on the website, and a license key is required. The limited trial software is provided "as is" and without any warranty.
